What is the KINDness Club?

A cool club for kids from ages 6-12, the KINDness club helps kids learn about animals while they have fun. Each month, KINDness Club kids visit wildlife preserves, horse farms or other animal havens or hear animal experts talk about everything from iguanas to rabbits. Kids in the club also make educational displays and help out with events.

What does KINDness stand for?

KIND stands for Kids In Nature's Defense, and is a program of the National Association of Humane and Environmental Education (NAHEE), the youth education division of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Although our names are similar, the Frederick County Humane Society is an independent not-for-profit organization. We receive no government funding, nor do we have a "parent" organization.

When does the club meet?

The KINDness club meets the last Saturday of each month from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Please note that meeting events and time are subject to change. Members will be provided with details prior to each meeting via email. You can also contact the FCHS office at (301) 694-8300 to confirm meeting events and times.

We're always seeking new ideas for meeting events and activities. So please let us know what you've enjoyed (or haven't enjoyed) in the past and what you'd like to do in the future. Submit your ideas and suggestions to Mindy Hanlon, our interim KIND leader.

Where does the KINDness Club meet?

Onsite activities are held in the education room at the Frederick County Humane Society (FCHS), 5712-D Industry Lane, Frederick. Who runs the KINDness club?

The KINDness club is run by Humane Society volunteers. If you're interested in helping to develop and run future programs, please ask for a volunteer application!

Do parents need to be present for the meetings?

Although parents are welcome to stay for the KINDness Club meetings, we do not require that parents be present. You can drop your child off at the designated time and location, and then return to pick your child up promptly at the end of the meeting.

Meetings will begin on time, so please arrive 5-10 minutes early for sign-in and to prevent disruptions. If parents do opt to remain for meetings, then please keep in mind that these meetings are for the kids. Our guest speakers will be happy to answer questions from the parents after the meeting has ended.

Can I bring my younger child to the meetings if they are less than 6 years old?

The KINDness Club meetings are designed for children ages 6-12. Many of our events feature speakers who present to the children and engage them in active discussions. We've found that these sessions require a longer attention span that most young children are not able to provide. The children also participate in games and activities that may be a bit more advanced, and in some cases, too competitive for smaller children. As a result, we ask that parents not bring small children to the meetings so that we can continue to promote a non-disruptive, safe, and educational experience for all eligible members of the KINDness Club.

Can my child volunteer at the Humane Society?

All Humane Society volunteers must be at least 15 years of age. The KINDness club programs are designed to educate younger kids about all types of animals, and about the local organizations that support animal welfare. They will also have opportunities to complete projects that will assist the FCHS in helping animals within our community.

In 2006, meeting dates are:
May 27 • June 24 • July 29August 26 • September 30 •
